5. For 17 years Dr. Mark Laudenslager at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center studied the effect of maternal separation on monkeys’ immune and endocrine systems and behavior. Now that he has decided not to apply for an extension of the research grant, animal advocates are calling for the release of the 34 monkeys used in the study. According to the Boulder Daily Camera, the university says they’re willing to retire the monkeys to a sanctuary for $10,000 to $15,000 per monkey. Rita Anderson of the Committee for Research Accountability (CRA) estimates that it is costing the university about $136,000 a year to maintain the colony. Anderson also says that she does not know of a case in which a university or facility has asked for money to release animals for retirement.
