This section of our web site contains links to other sites that may be useful: sites on animal-related legislation, the legislative process and general voter information, elected representatives, animal-friendly organizations, and more.

CHVL provides these links as a public service. We do not necessarily support or endorse the groups and organizations listed below. We list these links as a service for animals and the people who care about them.

Sites With Information Specifically About Animal-Related Legislation
The following sites contain sections that provide updates on animal-related legislation in the United States Congress and in state legislatures. The sections can generally be identified by terms such as "government affairs", "legislative update", and "legislation". These sites also provide tips on communicating with elected officials.

Some of the sites also provide links to results of roll-call votes.

Sites With Information About Government and Legislation
The Project Vote Smart web site contains a wide variety of information about state legislators, members of Congress, the legislative process, and the status of specific legislation. Project Vote-Smart is a non-partisan resource for voters.

Note: One resource that Project Vote Smart provides is politicians' responses to the National Political Awareness Test (NPAT), a non-biased candidate questionnaire that is designed to gives voters information on the respondent's position on various issues. If a politician refuses to respond to the NPAT, this failure is noted. Whatever your political views, we encourage all voters to take the time to see their elected representatives' responses (or lack thereof) to this revealing and informative questionnaire.

The Colorado General Assembly web site provides contact information for state legislators, text of bills, status of bills, information about the legislative process, a link to the Colorado Revised Statutes (C.R.S.), and more.

The 'Thomas' web site, a service of the Library of Congress, provides contact information, status of legislation, records of roll-call votes, and more. Through this site, you can also find Congressional Record entries for specific legislation or members of Congress.

The League of Women Voters web site, particularly the "E-Library", "Voter Information", and "Get Involved" sections, contains a variety of voter information.
The League of Women Voters of Colorado is a good resource for Colorado voters. It contains campaign finance reform information and election and caucus information.

"The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan organization, encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government and influences public policy through education and advocacy." Note: Although the League does take positions on and advocate for certain issues, the organization is non-partisan and seems to be a good resource.

Commission on Presidential Debates
The commission determines which preidential candidates will be allowed to participate in the "official" presidential debates. The commission web site states, "A nonpartisan, nonprofit, tax-exempt corporation, the CPD is not affiliated with any political party." Nonetheless, the co-chairpersons of the commission are former chairpersons of the Democratic National Committee and the Republican National Committee. Other leadership for the commission includes the daughter of a former Democratic U.S. president; two former Republican presidents; a former Democratic president; and several former or current Republican and Democratic members of Congress.

Elections Division section of the Colorado Department of State
The Elections Division section of this web site contains a Voter Registration Application Form, lists of state political and issue committees, federal committees, an on-line roster of county clerks and recorders, information on past elections, information on past and proposed ballot initiatives and referenda, a list of candidates for state office (the list is in pdf format only), information on professional lobbyists, and much more.

Center for Responsive Politics

The Open Secrets web site, provided by the Center for Responsive Politics, has a wealth of revealing information about how much money federal candidates have received and where the money comes from. (Information on state-level candidates may be available later.) Note that in the section conparing financial information for candidates in a specific race, only candidates who have filed contribution reports with the Federal Election Commission are listed.

For example, if you select the link to the "industries home page" and select the "Agribusiness" sector, you can see a breakdown of contributions to the Republican and Democratic parties from 1990 through the present, broken down by year and by contribution type -- soft money, PAC (political action committee), and individual -- and the proportion given to each of those two parties.

If you select the "Get Local!" tab, you can get to a wide assortment of information, including a detailed breakdown of the sources of a specific incumbent candidate's money. For example, at the time of this posting, this site indicates that for 1999-2000, PAC contributions made up just over half of the contributions District 5 Representative Joel Hefley received.

Other pages in the "Get Local!" section provide contribution information broken down by sector (e.g., agribusiness; defense), and, for each sector, broken down into PAC and individual contributions; lists of specific contributors and the amounts given; lists of the top contributors in a specific ZIP code; comparisons of amounts raised and spent in a specific race; and much more.

Colorado Department of State

The Colorado Department of State web site has a section for on-line inquiries about committee financial reports. The information is available for candidate, political, and issue committees. You don't have to have a userid and password to make inquiries.

The main "Elections" page of the same web site has links to information on the Fair Campaign Practices Act, election results, and more.
